What I took away from Cisco Live 2024 (and how to get more from any tech conference)
Nine sessions, one week in Las Vegas: the topics that mattered, and a simple routine for turning a conference into real value for your team.
In June 2024 I attended Cisco Live in Las Vegas. A week of sessions, labs and conversations is easy to enjoy and just as easy to forget, so I wrote down what I learned and shared a summary with my management afterwards. Here is the useful part, along with what I’d tell anyone planning to attend a conference.
What I attended
The sessions I completed were:
- Is Your Organization AI-Ready? How to deploy and manage AI-powered technologies rapidly and safely.
- AI Enablement Framework: how Cisco itself approaches AI internally.
- Cognitive SNOC, powered by Cisco XDR and Splunk: security operations with AI-assisted detection and response.
- Demystifying Wi-Fi Throughput in Meraki Environments: a troubleshooting-focused session.
- Troubleshoot Contact Center AI: support-focused technical content.
- Lessons Learned in Custom Zero-Trust Training Development: building practical zero-trust skills.
- Cisco Networking Innovation Summit: the opening session and the data center session.
- A tour of the Cisco Store Tech Lab, plus time at the Technical Assistance Center.
Five takeaways
- AI is moving from slides to products. The most valuable sessions were the ones about deploying AI rapidly and safely, meaning governance and security alongside the technology.
- Hands-on beats slides. Labs and troubleshooting sessions turn a feature name into something you can actually use on Monday morning.
- Strategy sessions are worth the time. Keynotes and summits help you decide where your own roadmap should and shouldn’t follow the trend.
- Security is the thread that connects everything. Almost every topic, from Wi-Fi to AI to data center, came back to visibility, identity and response.
- People are the real return. Conversations with engineers from other industries gave me practical ideas that no session covered.
How to get more from any conference
- Plan your agenda before you arrive. Mix strategy sessions, technical deep dives and hands-on labs, rather than only the topics you already know.
- Take notes in one place. Write two or three actions per session, not a transcript.
- Visit the support and engineering teams. Talking with the people who fix problems all day is often more valuable than a keynote.
- Write a one-page summary within a week. Cover what you learned, what you’d change, and what you recommend. It turns attendance into value for your team, and it helps you remember.
- Follow up with the people you met while the conversation is still fresh.
I returned to Cisco Live in Melbourne in 2025 and Las Vegas in 2026, and I still use this routine. If you’re planning to attend one, I’m happy to share more. Use the contact page.
